Gettysburg Duals: Warriors and State College stand out; Connellsville wins the day

GETTYSBURG – When you put several Mid-Penn Conference wrestling programs including State College, Gettysburg, Big Spring, West Perry and Hershey in one gymnasium on a Saturday – you’ll expect to see exciting and entertaining wrestling.

Throw in Connellsville WPIAL’s District 7 and you’ll really see some excellent competition on the mats.

That’s the way it unfolded Saturday at Gettysburg High School, as the Warriors hosted the annual Gettysburg Duals.

Connellsville won the day, sweeping the six rounds of duals and looking impressive doing it.

Gettysburg and State College each won four times and opened the tournament against each other with the Warriors prevailing in a tight dual meet with a 36-29 final.

Nolan Reinert (215) and Keegan McGrew (285) won the final two bouts by fall and major decision, respectively, to put the Warriors over the top.

Connellsville utilized a plethora of pins and bonus point victories to take down Gettysburg in the second match of the day, 41-20.

“We’re doing OK. We’re losing some close matches and winning some close matches, but we’re getting some solid mat time in today,” said Gettysburg head coach Chris Haines.

“We knew (Connellsville) was tough coming in. They’ve got the snowball going. Their kids are excited and kind of ran through us there, but it’s a great learning experience for us.

“State College matches up with us great, so we knew it was going to be a tight match and fortunately, we prevailed,” Haines said.

The Little Lions left with four wins on the day over Big Spring, Hershey, Upper Merion and West Perry.

Big Spring was in a tough match with Gettysburg, which was tied 12-12 after six bouts before the Warriors pulled away to a 51-12 win.

“We just tried to come out and wrestle hard and compete in these matches,” said Big Spring coach Chris Barrick. “I’m glad we won some (against Gettysburg) and some we left out there. It’s a grind coming here and getting through these six matches, so we’re putting our guys in the best position they can to win.”

Here is a partial list of box scores from Saturday’s Gettysburg Duals.
